Background of the Study
Government accounting regulations are critical for ensuring transparency, accountability, and the efficient allocation of resources in businesses. In Nigeria, SMEs contribute significantly to the economy but often struggle with adherence to accounting regulations due to limited resources and knowledge. Lagos State, being a major economic hub, offers a diverse array of SMEs operating across different sectors. However, many SMEs in Lagos still face challenges in complying with government regulations due to their complex nature and the cost implications of implementation. This study explores the impact of government accounting regulations on SME compliance in Lagos State, assessing the level of awareness, challenges, and strategies that can help SMEs meet regulatory requirements effectively.

The government has implemented several accounting regulations to ensure financial transparency and improve the overall financial reporting landscape in Nigeria. However, many SMEs in Lagos State, despite being subject to these regulations, do not comply effectively, leading to potential risks such as tax evasion, financial misreporting, and even business closure. Understanding the reasons behind the non-compliance and exploring the impact of these regulations on SMEs can provide insights into ways to enhance regulatory adherence.
